Men's Group Host Mother's Day Tea

The UCiM Men’s Group meets for fellowship, education and service by breaking bread together and conducting business of the fourth Thursday of every month to support our church and the wider community.  The Men’s Group hosts several dinner meetings, pancake breakfasts, supports West Broadway Community Ministry and hosts The Annual Mother’s Day Tea.

2016 Report

The United Church in Meadowood Men’s Group have begun 2016 with a New Executive and an exciting and ambitious plan for this coming year. We have a strong Financial Report that we are proud of, after listening to our Treasurer, and he has shared the Men’s Group Annual Report for 2015, with UCiM.

January’s Meeting, the Executive first reviewed the December success of the Men’s Mittens for West Broadway, which was 20 mittens purchased from Karen Irvine and her Crafty Ladies, and added to the donations, for a total of 50 pairs, for their WBCM Christmas hampers for men. West Broadway Community Ministry was very grateful for our continued partnership with UCiM, as one community is helping another.

The Executive shared their long range goals of having Guest Speakers join us for our Dinner Meetings, once a month, until summer. We started by inviting Rev. Lynda Trono to our February meeting. We continue with inviting Rudy Ramchandar to host a presentation on “The Mackenzie River, Canada’s Cold Amazon”. Then in April, Jim Smith has invited a person from the Assiniboine Park Zoo, possibly from the Conservatory to speak about the New Happenings at the Park for the spring of 2016. In May, we will discuss the subject of “Green Energy”, and what is in the news, and our commitment to the planet, as Men and Stewards of the Earth, with Mike Balshaw as our event leader. Our members supported this agenda, with specific topics of interest, to add to the evening, after our varied and always fulfilling and wonderfully delicious dinners. The Men’s Group considered and will review, hosting the next Shrove Tuesday dinner in 2017. We have also agreed to host, with the help of the UCiM congregation, the 2016 Mother’s Day Tea, on Saturday, May 7.

February’s Meeting, Rev. Lynda Trono, was invited to speak on the successes and goals of West Broadway Community Ministry, and she was happy to accept the invitation. The Men’s Group had pre-arranged a plan to present her with three donation cheques; one from the UCiM Men’s Group, one from the UCW, and one from UCiM Outreach Committee, totalling $685.00 (split three ways equally). Also, Rev. Lynda Trono brought her friend from WBCM, “Robert” who shared his personal story in the way of a creative video, which followed Lynda’s video of WBCM and their successful projects. The members could see graphically, how diverse the programs are at WBCM and the many areas where this community is fighting poverty and justice issues. Then we watched “Robert’s Story” (his personal video), and how he moved from Vancouver B.C. to Winnipeg, on a God inspired journey, and through Faith, music, and the help of WBCM, he has found a life of survival and purpose, instead of a life of despair, depression and dependency on drugs. He has found a relationship with God and Jesus Christ. It was quite inspiring, and emotional, as he was there in person, as a “from the streets” survivor. “Robert’s Story” short video, is available for sharing with our UCiM Church leaders for a future Sunday service, which was created with the help of 1Just City funding.

March’s dinner meeting is NOW on March 17, at the usual times. It will really be a St. Patrick’s Day dinner with Irish stew!! Wear something Green that day. It was changed from March 24, which is to avoid conflict with Rev. Ha Na Park’s plans for an evening Maundy Thursday Service. We have planned another special presentation that night, following our dinner on “The Cold Amazon”. In March through April, we will pursue all the volunteers required for the success of the 2016 Mother’s Day Tea.

April’s dinner meeting, is planned as a Pot Luck special, created by men whose last names are M- Z.
