Whoever you are, just as you are, God loves you. No exceptions.
The Greening of UCiM
Our Journey to Becoming Green Leaders
Early in 2023, the United Church in Meadowood congregation voted to replace our aging heating system with a geothermal ground source heat pump system.
After considerable discussion, we thought about our children and grandchildren and about the line in the United Church Creed:
“Living with Respect in Creation“
These words from the United Church Creed express our goal. Earth is a gift from God, our Creator. Our task is to care for it and to share its abundance in a sustainable way.
Reducing our carbon footprint by greening our building was our overall goal. Our first project was the installation of a geothermal ground source heat pump system, commissioned on December 24, 2024. This green technology provides both heating and cooling so that the activities hosted in our building can continue.
We aren’t stopping there, however. We are also exploring ways to make more sustainable choices in our everyday lives.
We reduced our green house gas emissions from 18 tonnes per year to zero
Please Join Us
You could join us in becoming green leaders:
Commit to live a life of Respect in Creation.
Advocate where you can.
Create awareness of the need for climate adaptation. Educate yourself. Take part in local and virtual climate actions: petitions, protests, letters to MLA’s, etc. Talk to your neighbours, family and friends.
Volunteer alongside us. Whatever your skills, we can find a place for you to contribute.
To reach Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 we all have to do our part.
Accountability Report
April 2024
From the Steering Committee of the Greening Campaign
We have an updated Accountability Report. Lots of progress has been made. We are close to the finish line on the Geothermal installation, but there is still much work to be done so we can improve the energy efficiency of our building.
Our geothermal ground source heat pump system was commissioned on December 24, 2024. Swift Underground installed over 16,000 feet of pipe with 24 loops as part of the project. This video, made by Swift Underground, details the installation of the pipe and loops.
