Meadowood Seniors Club

Who is the Meadowood Seniors Club and what do they do?

The Meadowood Seniors Club was formed a few years ago to promote and encourage those over 55 to become involved and active in the community.  The Council of the United Church in Meadowood agreed to the formation of an independent group for seniors who govern themselves and work closely with the church and have their meetings at the church. Those belonging to the Meadowood Seniors Group or coming to events provided by the group do not have to be congregants of the church.

The Meadowood Senior’s Club organizes activities and special events that we think are of interest to seniors.  We have not established a membership fee as we have been very fortunate over the last 3 years in receiving grants from the federal government’s New Horizons for Senior’s program – totalling approximately $35,000 to cover expenses for our programs. To thank the United Church in Meadowood for allowing us the use of their space and encouraging our programs, we have used most of these funds to purchase items for the church that they need and would make events for seniors more enjoyable. Some of these items are computers, air-conditioning units, upgrading flooring, bathroom, storage area and tables and chairs for the MacAskill room. Recently we purchased banquet tables to maximize the Quilting and Cropping fundraising events for the church and made donations to the Gardening and Handicrafters for supplies.

Organizing outings followed by lunch is a fun way to become more aware of activities in the community and getting to know other seniors over a cup of tea and lunch. In September we met at the Royal Canadian Mint for a guided tour and then returned to the church for a light lunch. Just in time for Thanksgiving in October we had a flower arranging seminar where everyone made a fall arrangement to take home and we had time over lunch to admire all the creative ideas. At the end of October, the Senior’s Club organized a catered turkey dinner, open to the community for 150 people, to gather and be grateful for all the blessings we have around us.  After the dinner expenses were covered we had realized a profit and, in turn, donated $300 to the church to show our grateful appreciation of the facilities we enjoy.
