The Budgell Bikers

Harry’s story

Harry was a very active individual playing sports throughout his life. In 2006 at the age of 64, Harry suffered a massive stroke after a triple by-pass and heart valve replacement. I was told he would never walk or talk again. Harry was sent to Riverview for rehab and stayed in the Brain Injury Unit. Three months later, Harry walked out of the unit and was able to enjoy his life at home. Harry did have deficiencies and had to have home care but he was able to enjoy his life until he was hospitalized in June of 2016 due to a fall. Harry had broken his hip and never recovered.

When he was discharged from the hospital we fought to get him back to Riverview Health Centre and when he was transferred there it felt like his journey went full circle. There was no stone unturned to try to improve his quality of life but last September 27, Harry suffered a heart attack and passed the following day. I miss him every day and try to live life honoring him.

As most of you know I am an avid cyclist and when my one of my friends had mentioned there was a bike that allowed residents to ride around the Riverview area. I was thrilled, but I soon found out that the resident needed to have a bit of mobility to be able to transfer to the bike and while the bike is wonderful it doesn’t serve the residents that are wheelchair bound.

After speaking with that same friend, she said suggested a bike that is made in Denmark bike for those who are bound to a wheelchair. With the help of White Pines Fixies bike shop the bike will be ordered for the residents at Riverview.

The Budgell Bikers need your help to match the $5000.00 grant the City of Winnipeg has provided to bring to fruition the dream that Harry and I had of cycling together.  I would like to thank everyone who has agreed to ride, City Councillor-Matt Allard and Brendan McAndrew of White Pine Fixies help make this dream a reality.
